The Best Pet Insurance for Pet Travelers

More and more people are traveling with their pets every year, and companies are noticing. Travel agencies that include pet travel are popping up, pet-friendly businesses are booming, and there are more travel options for you and your furry friend than ever. But the one area of travel that hasn’t seemed to catch up is insurance.

There's only one insurance that will cover your pet when you're traveling internationally. Keep your pet safe and have peace of mind with this coverage.

Travel insurance is a necessity. It will cover you for emergencies, and protect you from disruptions to your trip. It can help with something as small and common as lost luggage, to major issues like emergency evacuations.

I always get travel insurance, especially when going overseas. Accidents happen, and I don’t want to be blindsided by extra costs.

But this protection is limited to me and my partner. It’s humans only! So when I fly to another country with my pets, they are completely uncovered. It’s a huge risk, and not one that makes me feel good.

Pet Accidents Happen

The risk of “what if” turned into a reality not once, but twice!

When the emergency in Guatemala happened, we had to rush both dogs to the vet and pay for everything out of pocket.

Then Kitty, our cat, got sick in Brazil. A liver issue caused him to spend two nights in an emergency clinic. Again, it was an unavoidable illness, and again, we paid out of pocket.

We hadn’t factored these costs into our budget, but they also weren’t ones we could avoid. Our pets’ health and safety always comes first.

I started to wonder if there was another way.

Researching Pet Insurance Companies

So, I started to do research. There had to be a company that helped pet parents who traveled, right? I started with travel insurance companies.

I figured there must be a travel insurance company that covers pets. I reached out to the top companies in the travel industry via email, twitter and online chat.

Slowly, the answers came pouring in, and they weren’t good. None of the ten companies that I reached out to cover pets as part of any plan they offered. Bummer.

Next, I reached out to pet health insurance companies.

According to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, more than two million pets in the United States and Canada were insured at the end of 2017, up about 17 percent from the year before.

It’s a necessary protection for your pets, given the rising cost of veterinary care. I knew that there are many pet health insurance options for US residents, but I didn’t know if any covered pets who traveled.

Again, I got a lot of negative answers, and I was starting to lose hope.

Until Embrace.

Embrace Pet Insurance started in 2003 when it won the Wharton Business Plan Competition. Since then, they’ve grown to insure over 100,000 pets across the US.

They offer a Healthy Pet Deductible™ with every policy, the industry’s first and only diminishing deductible feature, as well as a Wellness Rewards program to help cover the cost of routine veterinary care, grooming and training.

They’ve gotten an A+ Rating from Better Business Bureau and they are rated over 9/10 at PetInsuranceReview.com. Plus, they give back! For every policy sold, Embrace donates $2 to a pet-related charity.

There’s many things I love about them, but I especially love that they’re able to keep up with the times, and see that pets travel and need coverage too. Pets deserve to be protected, no matter where in the world they are.

I reached out to Embrace to get the low down on the pet insurance they offer and why they provide the best coverage for your pet, no matter where you are in the world.

Why is it important for pet owners to get health insurance for their pets?

It’s important for pet owners to get health insurance for their pets because it’s peace of mind should an unexpected accident or illness occur. It means they can move forward with their vet’s recommended course of treatment without the stress of the financial burden that vet bills can bring.

What are the benefits of going with Embrace Pet Insurance?

There are several benefits in choosing Embrace as your pet insurance provider. Embrace offers personalized policies where pet parents can choose their annual maximum, deductible and reimbursement percentage to best fit their budget.

Embrace covers genetic and breed-specific conditions, alternative therapies, and prescription drugs under their accident/illness policy, which not all pet insurance companies cover.

No pet insurance company covers pre-existing conditions, but Embrace is one of the few companies that evaluates them fairly by distinguishing between curable and incurable pre-existing conditions.

Embrace is also the only pet insurance company in the industry that rewards pet parents for having a healthy pet. With Embrace’s Healthy Pet Deductible, your pet’s annual deductible automatically goes down by $50 each year that you don’t receive a claim reimbursement for that pet.

In addition, Embrace sets themselves apart from the competition with their outstanding customer service, consistently rated more than 9/10 on PetInsuranceReview.com.

We also offer a variety of policy discounts, which can be found here.

Do some animals cost more to insure than others?

Our coverage is based on the pet breed, age and location in which they live. So, yes, it depends.

Are there any dogs or cats that you won’t insure?

If purchasing a new policy for a dog or cat above the age of 14, they would only be eligible for an accident-only policy. Besides that, no! We will insure any dog or cat.

What vets, specialists or emergency clinics are covered?

Any vet, specialist or emergency clinic! We have no networks (like human insurance does).

Embrace covers animals who travel. What countries do you cover and how does it work?

This works the same as any other claim. Pet parents should have the vet complete the claim form and send the invoice. We have translators we work with for medical records. We also use a program to convert the currency based on the date of the services (i.e. if the service was provided on January 1st – we would convert the currency based on the value of the currency on that day.)

Are pet owners who are traveling able to access the 24/7 Pet Help Line?

The 24/7 pet help line is available to access anywhere via MyEmbrace. Long distance charges may be incurred, but they can use chat or email with no fee. However, it’s important to note that we’re transitioning providers for that service so it won’t be available for the next few months.

What does the Embrace plan cover

Are pets who are abroad covered by all Embrace plans?

Yes! Embrace has one simple, comprehensive insurance plan and pets who are abroad would be covered by this plan.

Are there any situations abroad that Embrace won’t cover?

We only cover pets who reside in the US. If they are out of the country for more than 51% of the year, it’s possible that they would no longer be considered a resident.

Thank you so much to Embrace for answering our questions, and caring about pets who travel!
