Airline Policies in Cabin

Airline Pet Policies in Cabin

If you’re planning to fly with your pet in cabin, you’ll quickly learn that no two airlines are created equal. There is no universal standard when it comes to flying with your pet – each airline has their own policies and restrictions, and they often change over time. Before choosing to fly, it’s best to check up on your airline of choice and see if their pet policies have changed or not. Check out our list of airlines and see what each airline requires for you to travel with your pet in cabin.

Aegean Airlines Pet Policy

With the exception of specific breeds, only cats, dogs [guide dogs included (see “Service animals” below)] and ferrets (family of mammals: weasels, polecats, ermines and zibeline) can travel in the aircraft cabin with you.

Each passenger is allowed to travel with only one (1) pet in cabin, carried within a special box/container. The maximum permitted weight for a pet, combined with its container, is eight (8) kilos.

If you wish to travel with more pets, they must be of the same species, familiar with each other and carried within the same special box/container. They should also not exceed the maximum weight of eight (8) kilos (including their container).

In case you are traveling with an infant, you are not allowed to travel with a pet in cabin as well.

  • Pets should be carried within a special box/container which is the passenger’s responsibility to provide.
  • The container must not exceed 55cm length x 40cm width x 23cm height. For DH8-100, DH8-400 and ATR aircraft, the following maximum dimensions apply: 40cm length x 25cm width x 25cm height.
  • If you do not have your own container, we will give you a disposable one, available in domestic airports.
  • The container should be leak-proof and pets must be kept there during the whole flight.
  • Pet owners should ensure that pets have enough food and water for the whole flight, including possible transfer times, if applicable.
  • Passengers travelling with a pet in cabin must be seated on any window seat, not in the first row or the emergency exit row and the adjacent ones.
  • The container must be placed under the seat in front of the passenger.
  • Pets may enter lounges but should await their onward journey in their special box/container.

Health condition

Pets/animals must be minimum 12 weeks old, with a valid anti-rabies vaccination.

  • The anti-rabies vaccination is usually repeated every year. The vaccination should be valid and in effect when travelling and with minimum days of 21 since last shot.
  • For a vaccination to be considered valid, it must be applied after microchip. Practically, the pet/animal must be minimum 105 days old in order to be accepted for transportation.

In general, pets/animals must be clean, healthy, harmless, odorless, not pregnant, not sedated and not annoying for other passengers.

Travel documents and check-in

  • Pets/animals must be presented at a check-in counter for acceptance at least one (1) hour before flight departure.
  •  At the Athens and Thessaloniki airports there are special check-in counters exclusively for passengers with pets/animals.
  • The pet/animal’s health book must be presented for inspection and the pet/animal must have been fitted with the required ID microchip.
  • If a pet/animal is not accompanied by its owner, a written authorization from the owner, using a declaration, is required.
  • Online and mobile check-in is available but you may pick your boarding pass at the airport.

Traveling abroad

  • Transportation of pets is subject to Governmental regulations concerning import, export and transit of live animals. Each country may impose additional conditions; therefore, it is mandatory and advised for each passenger/pet owner to visit the respective authorities (usually Ministry of Food and Animal) of their destination country for further requirements.
  • Transportation of dogs, cats and ferrets to the UK is only permitted for flights to London Heathrow and only to be sent as cargo.
  • When travelling abroad, pet owners must also present a pet passport.

It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that all paperwork required for the importation of their pet is correct for the country they are entering.

  • For safety reasons, your pet must remain in the travel container at all times. If your pet is disruptive, it’s up to you to soothe him/her without taking him/her from the pet container.
Please Note: While it might be tempting to help comfort your pet, most veterinarians advise against sedating pets for travel since the effects of tranquilizers on animals at higher altitudes are unpredictable.
  • We ask that you do not provide food or water to your pet while traveling on the aircraft. The stress of traveling, the motion of the aircraft, and other factors could make your pet uncomfortable.
  • Please Note: No oxygen will be administered to a pet in the event of an emergency.
  • Your pet needs to be harmless, not disruptive, odorless, and require no attention during flight.

A few things to know about your pet’s traveling container:

  • The travel container must be large enough for the pet to stand, turn around, and lie down in a natural position (you want your pet to be comfortable, don’t you?). The carrier must also fit underneath the seat in front of you. There may be certain seats that cannot accommodate your pet container, but we’ll work with you to get a seat assignment with space.
  • Maximum dimensions for a pet container are 18″ length x 14″ width x 8″ height.
  • We recommend the container be a soft-sided case.
  • Your pet must stay in its container at all times.

  • The pet fee is $125 each way and can be added in the Extras section during booking.
  • A maximum of two pets per traveler is allowed, each in their own carrier. In order to bring a second pet, a second seat and pet fee must be paid.
  • A total of six pets are allowed on each flight, so it’s best to book early.
  • We know how much you love to spoil your pet, but they’re not allowed in Mint.
  • We highly recommend that you sit in a window or aisle seat. You will not be assigned an exit row, bulkhead seat or any seat restricted for under-seat stowage.
  • Pets are not accepted on interline/codeshare bookings, regardless of booking source (jetblue.com, travel agency, partner airline’s website, etc.).
  • TrueBlue members earn 300 extra points per segment for adding a pet to their booking.

At the Airport

Already paid the pet fee and have your pet’s SSR code? You can check in 24 hours before your flight online, on the JetBlue app or at an airport kiosk.

  • Once you’re checked in, please stop by a full-service counter—or speak with a JetBlue crewmember in the self-service lobby—to obtain your special JetPaws® bag tag, which will be attached to your pet’s carrier so everyone knows they’re runway-ready. It also comes with some handy Petiquette® tips.
  • At the security checkpoint, remove your pet and carry (or walk) it while the pet carrier is x-rayed. Pets are allowed in the TSA Pre® line with approved travelers.
  • Your pet and carrier count as one personal item.
  • All pets must remain inside the pet carrier while at the airport and on the plane.
  • During taxi, takeoff, and landing, your pet must remain inside the carrier under the seat in front of you. During the rest of the flight, you may hold the carrier on your lap (or, if you purchased an additional seat for your pet, you may place the carrier on that seat or on your lap).
  • Have a pet stroller? You may gate-check it for no charge to the arrival gate or bag carousel at your destination. Pet strollers are not considered an assistive device and would incur a charge if checked at the ticket counter.
  • Unless you’re at an airport that has a post-security pet relief area (like JetBlue’s T5 at JFK), you’ll need to exit the airport and return through security if your pet needs to relieve him/herself.

united airlines

United Pet Policy

What are in-cabin pets?

In-cabin pets are domesticated cats and dogs that can fit in a travel carrier underneath the seat in front of you.

Pets can’t be in-cabin on flights to, from or through Hawaii and these international cities, but they are allowed in-cabin on select United flights.

Requirements for in-cabin pets

  • On domestic flights, puppies and kittens must be at least 2 months old. On international flights, puppies and kittens must be at least 4 months old due to rabies vaccination requirements.
  • Pets can’t travel with unaccompanied minors.
  • If you want to bring aboard an additional pet, you’ll need to buy an extra ticket for that pet and pay an additional $125 each way. Your pet must also always remain in the floor space under the seat.
  • If your pet doesn’t fit in a kennel, then they’ll need to travel with our PetSafe® program.
  • Pets must travel on the same flights as the traveler responsible for them.
  • If there’s an emergency, oxygen service won’t be available for pets.

Carriers and kennels

A pet traveling in cabin must be carried in an approved hard-sided or soft-sided kennel. The kennel must fit completely under the seat in front of you and remain there at all times. The maximum dimensions for hard-sided kennels are 17.5 inches long x 12 inches wide x 7.5 inches high (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm). The recommended maximum dimensions for soft-sided kennels are 18 inches long x 11 inches wide x 11 inches high (46 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm). Soft-sided pet carriers can exceed these dimensions slightly because they are collapsible and able to fit underneath a seat without blocking the aisle. Only one pet is allowed in a kennel, and the animal must be able to stand up and turn around comfortably.

For questions, please contact the United Customer Contact Center at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331).

At the airport with an in-cabin pet

When you arrive at the airport with your in-cabin pet, please check in with a United customer service representative who will give you a bright yellow bag tag to attach to your pet’s kennel.

On board with an in-cabin pet

  • Your pet must stay in their kennel with the door closed at all times while in the airport, at the boarding area and while on board the plane.
  • Your pet’s kennel must stay at your feet, underneath the seat in front of you.

Restrictions based on aircraft, cabin, and seat

  • You can book your pet for in-cabin travel only if there is space available.
  • If you’re traveling with an in-cabin pet, you cannot be seated in the bulkhead or an emergency exit row.
  • If you’re traveling with an in-cabin pet, you cannot be seated in a United Premium Plus℠ seat because the footrest limits the storage space under the seats.
  • Two pets per flight are allowed in our premium cabins on select aircraft. Pets are not permitted in our premium cabins on Boeing 757-200, 767, 777 or 787 aircraft because of limited storage space under the seat.
  • Four pets per flight are allowed in United Economy® on all narrow-body aircraft operated by United (including the Boeing 737 and 757, or the Airbus 319/320), or six pets per flight on wide-body aircraft (including the Boeing 767, 777 and 787).
    • A customer traveling with an in-cabin pet in United Economy on Boeing 757-200 aircraft will need to be seated in a window seat because of limited storage space under aisle and middle seats.
  • For flights on the Boeing 737 MAX 9, the maximum kennel height is 10 inches (25 cm).
  • The number of in-cabin pets allowed varies by United Express partner airline. For more information about the operating carrier’s in-cabin pet policy, contact the United Customer Contact Center.

WestJet Pet Policy

  • Space for pets cannot be reserved online. To add your pet to your travel plans, please contact us by phone.
  • Please note that an empty kennel or a pet in a kennel will be counted towards your carry-on baggage allowance as either a personal item or a carry-on item, depending on its size.
  • We limit the number of pets permitted on each flight, so we strongly recommend requesting space for your pet as soon as you have completed your booking. If you do not request space for your pet(s) 48 hours before departure, space may not be available, and you may not be permitted to travel with your pet(s).

Pets traveling as carry-on must have room to stand, sit and move naturally in their kennel. Depending on the type of aircraft, you may be required to sit in a window seat due to space limitations beneath non-window seats. Please be aware that if you are traveling with a cat on a flight where a guest with a severe allergy to cat dander is also traveling, we may be required to move you toward the rear of the aircraft to meet the Canadian Transportation Agency’s buffer zone requirement for the allergic guest. If this is required, you will be notified before you board your flight, and you will be seated to allow for a minimum of a bank of seats between the persons with a disabling allergy to cats and your cat.

Pet Kennel Size
